Ngozi means ‘The Big One’ in the local language.

Being the second-largest Crater Lake, Lake Ngozi draws hundreds of visitors and a leading tourist Destination Of Tanzania. The Lake is located approximately 38 kilometers south of Mbeya in the Mporoto Ridge Forest Reserve.

Covering around 9,332 hectares of area, Lake Ngozi has a length of 2.5 kilometers and a width of 1.5 kilometers and 75 meters deep.

The trip to the Lake is an exciting adventure through the dense Montane forest to the crater rim. The cascading landscape of the Uporoto range enhances the beauty of the horrific gorge. But it’s risky to hike to the gorge.

The magnificent view of Lake Ngozi is outstanding for its natural beauty and it is famous for a superb hiking hotspot. With an overwhelming tranquil air, the view of the Lake from the top of the crater rim is the real reward.

The Lake is formed from the extinct Ngozi Volcano covered with the wall of sparkling green Lake.   The peak is the highest point of the Uporoto Ridge Forest Reserve.

The 75m deep Lake is home to different species of fishes. The lake is thought to be an age of one million years, and remains an old volcano that has now collapsed to form a wide caldera filled with a shining alkaline ‘soda’ waters. The saline water of the lake holds some spiritual significance according to the locals. The waters believed to have magical medicinal powers.

The upland grassland and tropical forest give the view of colobus monkeys chatter and play. In addition to this a number of colourful birds inhabit inside the park.

Entrance fees include entry for visitors, vehicles and fees for a guide ($9) and a guard ($6.50) to look after the vehicle.

Like other national parks, travelling to Lake Arusha National Park is also safe. Although some health concerns are necessary to follow, like mosquito repellent with at least 30% DEET, antimalaria medication and covering the skin during the evening time.
