Covering an area of about 2.20 square Kilometers, Saanane National Park is located on an island in Lake Victoria. The park got its name from its former owner Saanane Chawandi.
In 1964, Saanane was the first zoo in Tanzania. Later in 1991, it was recognized as a game reserve and then in 2013, it was gazetted as a National Park.
The park can be reached in about 20-15 min boat ride from Mwanza town of Tanzania. The Park is also famous for its location within the city of Tanzania. With lots of adventures, the park welcomes visitors who are coming for a memorable Tanzania Safari.
The wildlife seen in the park includes Elephant, Buffalo, Bushbuck, Eland, Dik Dik, Impala, Black Rhino, Topi, Wildebeest, Zebra, Warthog, and Monkeys like Patas and Vervet, Giraffe, Porcupine and crocodiles. Dangerous animals like Rhinos and Buffaloes are also can be encountered.
Saanane National Park also boasts with a variety of bird species. About 40 species of residents and migratory birds are common in the Island. The spectacular scenery over Mwanza south and Lake Victoria make Saanane National Park more attractive.
Saanane National Park is best for all year round. November to March is best for watching most varied birdlife. The scenery remains the greenest during this period. June-August is the dry season and great for game viewing, rock hiking and Picnicking.
Buffalo, Bushbuck, Dik Dik, Elephant, Eland. Impala, Black Rhino, Topi, Warthog, Wildebeast, Zebra, and Monkeys like Patas and Vervet, Giraffe, crocodiles, rhino, buffalo are most common.

Like other national parks, travelling to Saanane National Park is also safe. Although some health concerns are necessary to follow, like mosquito repellent with at least 30% DEET, antimalaria medication and covering the skin during the evening time.
